Filmed by Zachary Tarrant

“There was a case recently, a young man around 36 years old. He had a wound on his mouth, it was very bad.

We all gave our blood to help him. The surgery lasted hours, but in the end he died. His brothers were standing by his side, they were in tears. Everyone was devastated”

This short was produced in August 2024, but its release was delayed to avoid revealing the location. Since the filming, the situation in the region has deteriorated drastically. With ongoing Russian advances and relentless artillery and aerial bombardment, the medical team was forced to relocate.

The work documented in this short film takes place 24 hours a day at hundreds of locations along Ukraine's 600-mile frontline. These stabilization points are the first line of life-saving care for soldiers grievously wounded on the battlefield. Teams of combat medics travel to the site of injury at the frontline, either to a designated evacuation point or directly to the point of injury if moving the soldier is not possible. The teams provide whatever care they can on the spot, performing any life-saving procedures possible. They then race the soldier to a nearby stabilization point, positioned just a few kilometers from the front. These points are where medics save lives, performing surgeries and other life saving care in locations under constant artillery and aerial bombardment. Without these points, soldiers would have to be transported to far-off hospitals, and for most injuries, such a long journey would mean death.

The work is dangerous and grueling. The teams are tight knit and determined units, working nonstop to save lives.
